00:00
from my time on youtube i have seen a
00:02
ton of people buy into the benefits of
00:04
single dosing even on grinders that
00:06
aren't necessarily meant for it luckily
00:08
because of that uptick in popularity
00:10
there's now a few new single dosing
00:12
grinders coming onto the market at more
00:14
reasonable consumer level price points
00:17
today we'll be looking at one that goes
00:19
by several different names and on paper
00:21
it appears to provide undeniable bang
00:23
for your buck

00:41
the turin df-64 also known as the gio to
00:44
64 is a chinese manufactured single
00:47
dosing grinder
00:48
this one is the turin df64 so that's how
00:51
i'll be referring to it for the
00:52
remainder of this video now because
00:55
these grinders are manufactured in china
00:56
the process of getting one here in north
00:58
america can be a little bit long and
01:00
difficult
01:02
luckily there are actually several state
01:04
side distributors that are stalking
01:05
these grinders which makes the buying
01:07
process not only quicker but also more
01:10
confidence inspiring
01:11
one of those distributors is espresso
01:13
outlet and they were the ones who are
01:14
actually nice enough to send us this
01:16
unit for review so if you want to check
01:18
these out i will leave a link to their
01:19
storefront down in the description below
01:22
starting off with build quality the
01:23
df-64 has a surprising heft coming in at
01:27
15 pounds this grinder isn't going to be
01:29
rattling or sliding around your counter
01:31
anytime soon
01:33
the core of this machine is all metal
01:35
giving it a good sturdy frame the motor
01:38
is quiet and powerful and the grind
01:40
adjustment felt nice and smooth through
01:42
the large stepless adjustment ring
01:45
the designers were clearly quite
01:47
deliberate in investing the money where
01:49
it mattered most and this machine has a
01:51
good foundation because of it
01:53
areas that clearly didn't receive a
01:55
large chunk of the budget are the design
01:58
itself cough cough
02:00
the plastic dosing cup
02:02
the portafilter forks and the vinyl wrap
02:04
and branding that covers the whole
02:06
machine as you can see i've lost a part
02:08
of my turin logo in transit
02:10
the decision to wrap these grinders
02:12
allowed them to offer it in a variety of
02:14
colors and likely also save them some
02:16
money over brushing or powder coating if
02:18
you don't like the look i've seen lots
02:20
of people re-wrap it in a color of their
02:22
choice or actually just completely
02:24
remove the wrap and leave it as a bare
02:26
metal appearance in terms of user
02:28
experience i was left feeling as though
02:30
the df-64 got me about 80 percent of the
02:33
way there and they expected me to make
02:35
up that final 20
02:37
on my own through further modifications
02:39
to the machine
02:40
for example the large grind dial is
02:43
great but there is no way to accurately
02:45
see exactly what grind setting you're at
02:48
which is an issue if you often switch
02:50
between espresso and other brew styles
02:52
there are some good designs for grind
02:54
indicators out there but it's up to you
02:56
to put one on
02:58
i opted to use the included dosing cup
03:01
with this grinder not just because
03:03
that's my preferred workflow but also
03:05
because these forks did a very poor job
03:08
of holding a heavy portafilter in place
03:11
even with the light plastic cup the fit
03:13
was still not very confidence inspiring
03:16
adding to the awkwardness of the forks
03:18
is the fact that the power button is
03:20
located directly below them making it
03:22
tricky to press while trying to not
03:24
knock down your dosing cup
03:26
again someone with some modification
03:28
prowess could probably design a better
03:30
portafilter holder for themselves but
03:32
the ones that come stock leave a lot to
03:34
be desired
03:36
other than those small quirks the df-64
03:39
was actually pretty enjoyable to live
03:40
with it's nice and quiet when in use
03:43
grinds relatively quickly thanks to the
03:45
64 millimeter burs
03:47
is pretty clean if you use some rdt
03:50
the available grind sizes easily cover
03:52
from french press to espresso fine and
03:55
it was able to keep retention under 0.2
03:57
grams through the use of the bellows one
04:00
difference between this grinder and
04:02
other single dosers is that you're not
04:03
going to be able to pour beans in with
04:05
the burrs already spinning
04:07
the df-64 has a lot of popcorning which
04:11
necessitates the use of a permanent cap
04:13
over the bellow's opening forget to put
04:15
this on and you'll have a kitchen full
04:17
of sharp bean bits
04:19
you'll also want to give the bellows and
04:20
shoot a regular cleaning as they tend to
04:22
get quite dirty because of this
04:25
moving on to the actual grinding
04:26
performance the df-64 surprised me in
04:29
one negative way and one positive way
04:32
starting with the negative when i first
04:34
started using this grinder there was a
04:36
shocking amount of fines in my grounds
04:39
now initially i chalked this up to
04:41
either misaligned burrs or just plain
04:43
crappy burs but after quite literally
04:46
digging a bit deeper into the issue i
04:48
discovered the source of the problem
04:50
the silicone clump crusher at the top of
04:52
the chute is far too stiff effectively
04:55
creating a complete seal under anything
04:58
less than full flow
04:59
this is not only bad because it traps
05:02
some grinds back but also because a
05:04
large enough buildup of grinds will
05:06
result in some of them re-entering the
05:08
burrs and getting ground even further
05:11
as you can see the grounds coming out
05:13
with the last two pumps of the bellows
05:15
was almost like icing sugar
05:17
so i simply cut those fins so they were
05:20
less obtrusive to the flow of grinds now
05:23
i'm hearing that on newer versions of
05:25
these machines that issue has been
05:26
slightly resolved but not completely
05:29
regardless after that small modification
05:32
i was pleasantly surprised by the
05:33
quality of grinds i was getting for the
05:36
price this grinder was making some
05:38
really good cups of coffee
05:40
i opted to just spec the standard burrs
05:42
out of curiosity and for the price point
05:45
of that combination it's definitely
05:47
punching above its weight class now of
05:49
course you could opt to spec some more
05:51
specialized ssp burs in this setup at
05:54
the time of purchase or even further
05:56
down the road because of how easy it is
05:58
to actually get into this machine
06:01
but that would start to push it up into
06:03
a price point with some pretty serious
06:05
competitors the beauty of the df-64 is
06:08
it gives you a really solid foundation
06:10
and leaves you with a choice as to what
06:12
you want to do from a workflow and a
06:14
burst perspective now this can be either
06:17
a positive thing or a negative thing if
06:20
you just want the most easy to use
06:21
grinder straight out of the box then the
06:23
df-64 might not be for you the port
06:26
filter holder barely works the power
06:28
button is awkward there's no grind
06:30
indication and there really are some
06:32
internal tweaks that should be made to
06:34
have it perform its best
06:37
but if you're someone who's not afraid
06:39
to flex your creative muscle and get
06:41
your hands a little bit dirty then
06:42
you'll find yourself with a grinder that
06:44
performs well above the price that you
06:46
paid for it the df-64 offers a very
06:49
sturdy foundation for you to then
06:50
potentially modify and tweak to your
06:52
liking and there are already tons of
06:54
online communities based around doing
06:56
exactly that offering solutions for the
06:59
dial indicator portafilter holders clump
07:02
crushers even anti-popcorn devices you
07:04
just have to go and find them
07:07
if you want to check out this grinder
07:08
again i will have it linked down in the
07:09
description below if you've enjoyed this
